How to Find Out Whether Your Computer Is Part of a Botnet—and What To Do About It

I like a deal. But the next time you're thinking of buying an electronic device, you might wanna think twice before you buy something off brand, like a video streaming stick or a digital picture frame from a company you don't recognize. That's because these devices sometimes come pre-installed with software called Residential Proxy Software, and this stuff is bad. Residential Proxy Software lets anyone in the world get access to your home network. It can be used by hackers, it can be used by scammers. In the last few months, we've seen it be used to build a botnet of over 2 million devices. Now that's the bad news. The good news is there's a way to check your network to see if you're clean, and I'm gonna show you how to do it right now. All right, to do my test, I'm gonna go to Spur's website. Spur's a company that keeps track of residential proxy networks. So they usually have a good idea of whether you are part of a network or not. I go to Spur.us/me. See what happens. Okay, so observed risks unknown. That's as good as it gets. I don't have an observed risk on my network, so I am residential proxy free. And it's important to note that if you're running a VPN or something like iCloud relay, you're gonna need to turn that off first. Now we're gonna do the test on an infected network. It's doing an assessment. So you can see when you type in the Spur.us/me address, it comes back with a list of a couple of top client proxies. For observed risks, you can see it says callback proxy. That's not good. So if you get observed risks, if you get something there, and if you get top client proxies listed, you're gonna have to dig deeper. And this is where things get tricky because some people share IP addresses so you can get a top client proxy result, which looks bad, but actually be fine. And what you're gonna need to do is take a look at the devices on your network, take a look at the software on your network, and if you have stuff that's too good to be true, you might wanna get rid of it. If it's a steal of a deal, somebody might be stealing from you.
