Louvre Heist: How Thieves Stole ‘Priceless’ Jewels in Broad Daylight

Reporter: Thieves burst into the Louvre in Paris, stealing Crown jewels and prompting the world's most visited museum to be evacuated.

My reaction at first was, "Wow, this is an audacious, this is a professional deal that these individuals were involved in."

Reporter: Here's how the heist happened and why French authorities are in a race against time to recover the jewels. The robbery took place in The Galerie d'Apollon. At around 9:30 in the morning, four individuals drove motorcycles and a truck with a portable furniture elevator to the museum. They used the elevator to get up onto a balcony. They then cut through a window using what appeared to be angle grinders. Once inside the gallery, the thieves used the grinders to threaten guards and to cut into display cases containing Napoleonic and Royal jewelry. The thieves tried but failed to set their truck on fire before fleeing on the motorcycles. They were in and out of the gallery in less than seven minutes. The stolen jewels once belonged to French royalty or imperial rulers, and include diadems, necklaces, earrings, and brooches. French authorities describe the items as priceless. The thieves dropped a crown belonging to Empress Eugenie with nearly 1,400 diamonds before speeding away. It was later found damaged.

The value of these pieces really is in the cultural heritage. Not necessarily are they the finest diamonds in the world. They're just a lot of them, you know? And having a lot of diamonds doesn't always equate to a lot of value.

Reporter: Sunday's heist wasn't the museum's first. In 1911, an Italian national stole Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa." It was found two years later, and in 1983, two Renaissance era pieces of Armour was stolen before being recovered decades later in 2021. Paris's Modern Art Museum has also been targeted. In 2010, a thief made off with more than $120 million worth of artworks.

The more information that came out, I started to realize that it's not so professional. The fact that they left the ladder there and the vehicle they used to bring the ladder, the one crown that they had left behind and damaged, the loss of one of their disguises, which was, you know, their construction vest that they had on, the fact that they left their cutters, their art cutters there in the museum, all of that is forensically tied to these people. So there's a lot of leads here that the police are gonna be following up on.

Reporter: The heist comes as museum officials have raised alarms about the building's weak security. With investigators racing to find the stolen jewels, experts warn that as the items are so famous, they cannot be sold on, adding that the pieces instead could be dismantled.

The fear here would be maybe not even so much as melting them down. The fear might be that they might throw them away and destroy 'em because they don't get caught with them. There's been some speculation that the material might be all way out of the country. I think the pieces are still probably close by, and right now, they're laying low trying to figure out, "What in the world did we do?"
