This is very, very urgent situation, right, for this guy. Texting with him till 1:30 in the morning, literally.

Salam Alaikum, good day, sir. Situation on barge is very critical and only two, three days remain. And then is no food on barge. He wants to go home because the vessel was going to through almost state. And we have been reached out by more than 2000 seafarers in those almost state, but also in the enabling countries. These seafarers, they are trapped in that area. They have not chosen to go on. I do receive on daily basis, sometimes 60, sometimes 70 WhatsApps. At the beginning of the war, most of the cases we were receiving were request of repatriation. But after eight weeks, more and more are related to the lack of food and lack of provisions and lack of water, lack of fuel. Most of the words that we do receive are very often accompanied with videos, with pictures showing that there is a bomb being not far from where they are and they are afraid.

Oh.

In my 25 years, there is absolutely no precedent to what is happening now. So far we have done as ITF more than 500 repatriations. So the first thing is to approach the owners or managers, but sometimes, we don't know who the owner is. We have a management in a third country and we have the seafarer, from a fourth country and all this lack of transparency makes it more difficult because there is absolutely no protocol.

Now you are on board, right? I just spoken to our legal department will approach the port state again and maritime authorities. We have contacted already your embassy. This is a case of abandonment. The captain is seafarer who is asking for help, 12 months not paid. He is really, really worried and concerned to be repatriated before getting his wages.

I have seen notorious cases of abandonment from absolutely unscrupulous ship owners leaving the seafarers starving as leverage to force them to leave and renounce to their wages. But the abandonment situation is not only linked to this war. What the war has done is just to put more light on a situation that, in itself, was already bad. The seafareres, men and women are vulnerable, are exposed.

My vessel were attached. My vessel were attached. You're fired now.

These are workers and it's really, really affecting because at the end of the day, it is a seafarer with name, with nationality, with a family behind him and you cannot deal with it as a file, as a case, as a number. Did you sleep? Okay, captain, I will get in touch soon this afternoon again, okay? He has tried everything before coming to you and he repeats all the time. "You are our only hope, so please help us. Please, we want to go home. Please, we don't want to die here."
