Hi, I'm Suzy Welch. I'm a professor at NYU Stern School of Business, and I'm here to answer reader questions about getting a job in this crazy job market. Oh, I love this one, what's the worst career advice you've been told and what's the best and most helpful? Ah, the very worst career advice my students get all the time and I certainly got, was to do what you're passionate about. What dumb, dumb advice. You know why I hate it? I hate it because you have to be good at it also, you have to be good at it. Otherwise, it should be a hobby. There's also your emotional wiring and some jobs require different kinds of personalities. Your personalities actually, how the world experiences you, and the sooner you face into that and know how the world experiences you, the better. A reader asks as AI makes resumes, essays, and portfolios increasingly polished and interchangeable, what actually differentiates a candidate now in the eyes of employers? Okay, this is a very true question. What makes an employee or a prospective, a candidate stand out is they know about your company. They know who you are. They know about your history. They ask questions about your products, your markets, your customers, that they're actually they're brains in the game. They have not delegated their brain to AI. Easy to do, I get it, but they come in and they have an opinion that is a way to differentiate yourself is you actually have had a thought of that is not machine generated, and then you express it in a way that is not machine generated. A recent graduate named Ben asks, what is the best application method for us to compete in this abysmal job market? Companies are now using AI to screen for keywords, but simultaneously discourage and disqualify applicants from using AI to assist with resume building and tailoring. How are we supposed to win? It's diabolical. I sympathize with you. It's diabolical. I suppose people find jobs on places like Indeed and Handshake and LinkedIn. I suppose they do. I'm actually, I think we need to go back to the stone ages where you networked your way to a job. I think doing a crazy thing like writing a personal email or using this thing called the phone and speaking into it. I think you've gotta say, you may be surprised to be receiving this email from me, and I wouldn't be surprised if you, I mean, I think your humanity has to come through okay? I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, this went directly into your trash, but please gimme one moment to explain who I am and why I would do anything to work at your organization. A recent graduate name Joe asks, how does one prepare for an unseen, uncertain future in the world when the safe path of being, for example, an engineer is no longer dependable? How do I make sure that I'm still employed the remainder of my life? I think it's a matter of preparing your heart for understanding that it's in you and you will not be alone. Other people doing it and the economy will find a way and a place for you. It may not be what you expect. I think there's so much opportunity in startups. Go work for a company that's got four people. I know it's got no safety net. So does the big company, has no safety net. What's the difference between the grads who launched successfully and the ones who stall out? Well, let's talk about the ones who stall out first. They're doing it because it looks good or their parents told them to do it. The people who launch have got a couple of different things going on. They know themselves well. They are trying to do work that's at the intersection of their values and their aptitudes and their interests. The ones who launch well have a higher appetite for risk and they have more comfort with failure. The young people start out and say, I'm gonna swing big now before I have the mortgage, are the ones that tend to keep on picking themselves up and then people start to bet on them. I know that sounds like scary advice, but given it anyway.
