Thailand’s Prime Minister Ousted by Court Over Controversial Call

Thailand's Constitutional Court ruled that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had committed serious ethical breaches during a call she held earlier this summer with Hun Sen, the former leader of neighboring Cambodia. During that call, they were discussing a long running border of dispute that had recently escalated and after a recording of that phone call was released by Hun Sen, there were members of Paetongtarn Shinawatra's own coalition who were concerned that she was acting against the interests of the country and filed a case with the Constitutional Court. Paetongtarn is actually the third member of her family to be ousted from the Prime Minister's office before the end of their term. And what is clear is that this is a further blow against the Shinawatra Dynasty that has really dominated high politics for the past two decades. In a press conference after the verdict, Paetongtarn said that as a politician, she, of course, accepted the ruling of the court, but that as a citizen, she just wanted to emphasize again that she was always acting in the interest of Thailand and not in her personal interests. She also urged everybody in Thailand to work to maintain stability in the country, which at the moment is also undergoing a pretty serious economic crisis. The next step for Thailand is, of course, to find a new Prime Minister. It's not immediately clear that Paetongtarn's current coalition, which has a very small majority in Parliament, will be able to immediately unite behind a single candidate. There's also the possibility that one of the opposition parties that actually pulled out of the ruling coalition over the Hun Sen phone call could try to rally other parties into a new coalition and get its own candidate elected as Prime Minister. If all that fails, we might have to have new elections, which would throw Thailand into further political limbo.
