The Hidden Tariff Costs at the ‘Disneyland’ of Grocery Stores

This is Stew Leonard Jr., The CEO of Stew Leonard's, an eight-store grocery chain, once nicknamed, "The Disneyland of dairy stores." I don't think I've ever seen this at a grocery store. And like larger grocers, the company is starting to feel the strain from President Trump's global tariffs.

Right now, you're just throwing darts, We don't know what'll happen.

Shelby: We visited Stew Leonard's flagship store to see how tariffs are affecting a handful of popular grocery items, and what that says about the future effects of Trump's trade war. Pineapples from Costa Rica, fish from Greece, and even cheese from Italy, all of these items are subject to Trump's tariffs, but that doesn't mean customers are paying more for them, yet.

I'm just trying to get customers the product on the shelf, and sometimes, you gotta raise your price. You know, I don't want to, but everybody brought stuff in pre-tariff, they got it stateside, those inventories are getting depleted now. Now the real question is you gotta go back into the market and buy for the holidays, and a lot of those prices have gone up.

Shelby: Other major grocers face the same problem. Just listen to Walmart's CEO on the company's latest earnings call.

Doug: But as we replenish inventory at post-tariff price levels, we've continued to see our costs increase each week.

They do not want to be perceived as increasing their food prices, as contributing to inflation, they wanna be perceived as supporting customers, as maintaining food prices as low as possible.

Shelby: A number of factors can drive up grocery prices, like extreme weather or smaller herd sizes, but recent economic data suggests Trump's tariffs aren't helping. Grocery costs cooled considerably after spiking during the pandemic, but this August, they climbed 2.7% when compared to a year ago, marking the fastest pace of grocery inflation in two years.

While it's nearly impossible to look at a single data point and identify, "Okay, what are the supply and demand factors that are driving it?" Both the timing and the magnitude of what we're seeing for food price inflation, kind of lines up with the initial predictions about these tariff impacts.

Shelby: So, you want in your picture, you want the Shrimp in there?

Shrimp is one of our top-selling products in the store right here, customers love shrimp. This will be triple the size when we come into the holidays.

Shelby: The US loves shrimp, In fact, it imported 760 metric tons of it in 2024. The top exporter, India, which faces a hefty 50% tariff.

With the 50%, we're not buying from India anymore, we're switching over to Ecuador. These are 11.99, are on sale right now, and that's either gonna have to go up 25% probably, from Ecuador, that's where we're gonna have to buy these from. Now, what we're looking at with the tariffs, it's probably gonna be, maybe we're gonna sell 20% less this year than we did last year.

20% less?

Yeah.

Because the prices are going up?

Cause they're crucial, yeah.

Shelby: So it's a big deal.

It's big, it's big. Here's a little tropical fruit section in the store right now, you have mangoes, you have pineapples, you have bananas, three of our biggest imported items, and they come in from Costa Rica, 15% tariff.

Have these prices gone up?

No, no, we haven't raised those prices, we're a buck 99.

But to you, with tariffs?

To us, now our importer is eating the 15% rate.

Ah.

You know, he sort of says, "Stew, you know, I'm going to eat this for a while right now, I can't eat it forever, but I'm going to eat the 15% tariff, just so we don't have to raise our prices."

Shelby: Trump argues, his global tariffs will bring manufacturing back to the US.

And we have a lot of money coming in with the tariffs. we've never had money like this coming in.

Shelby: And at Stew Leonard's, there is evidence that the tariffs are having their intended effects.

But it prompted you to onshore this part of your business?

Yeah, it prompted us to onshore, so look at that scenario,

we were buying 'em offshore, the tariffs hit, we started buying it on-shore, that's what the government wants us to do.

Shelby: Yep.

But the price went up a little bit by getting it done in the US

And you're okay with that?

I'm okay with it, but it's not helping our margins out.

Shelby: Consumers have already started feeling the pinch. According to a "Wall Street Journal" poll conducted in July, more than half of respondents said, "They were concerned about the price of groceries." And 66% reported switching to less expensive products in the grocery store in the past year to save money.

Customers will switch if the price gets too high, or they'll just buy less, you know, which happens a lot too. How can you go to Thanksgiving without a shrimp platter out on the table, you know? So, it might be a smaller one, and they might put, you know, a big something else that's not as expensive. It comes down to economics at the end of the day.
