Trump Hails ‘Amazing’ Meeting With China’s Xi Jinping

We're gonna have a very successful meeting, I have no doubt.

I'm here in Busan, South Korea, a major beach city, and only a few miles from me, President Trump and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping are meeting for one of the world's most important summits.

President Xi is a great leader of a great country, and I think we're gonna have a fantastic relationship for a long period of time, and it's an honor to have you with us, thank you very much.

The meeting just concluded, and President Trump is saying that out of a scale of 1 to 10, he thought the meeting was a 12, and here's why. He said, "Leader Xi of China was going to buy more soybeans from the United States," taking the pressure off of Trump, who had been feeling it from farmers. He also said that, "China would be helping curb Fentanyl entries into the United States."

I put a 20% tariff on China because of the fentanyl coming in, which is a, it's a big tariff. And based on the statements today, I reduced it by 10%, so it's 10%, instead of 20%, effective immediately. I believe he's gonna work very hard to stop the death that's coming in.

Alexander: And Trump also said, "There might be more access to Rare Earths for the United States and more chips coming in for China."

So we continue to produce the Rare Earths and buy the Rare Earths and everything else, and, you know, when you see from other countries, but China is, that whole situation, that roadblock has gone now, there's no roadblock at all.

Now, this meeting was not the big trade deal that Trump is working toward, this was one agreement to set up the table for larger conversations down the line. Trump said that, "He will go to China for a meeting with Xi in April, and that'll continue the discussion between the two leaders." At this point, it's a fairly successful outcome for President Trump, who wanted to prove that he and Leader Xi could have a positive relationship, and find ways to cooperate, even as they manage the most important relationship in the world.

Given our different national conditions, we do not always see eye to eye with each other, and it is normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then.

But for right now, this is a bit of a detente, Trump has been a lot friendlier towards China in this second term, and this meeting was another example why, it's clear he's choosing a different approach, one where he feels he can cooperate with Xi, in order to get to someplace where they are both mutually happy.
