Key Takeaways From January’s Strong Jobs Report

The January jobs report came in very, very strong, but the question is, is this the start of a trend, or was this a one month aberration? So what we saw is that job growth ticked up 130,000 jobs in January, which was really, really a good month. Expectations had been far lower than that, somewhere in the neighborhood of 55 to 60,000. This was the best single month of job growth that we've seen since 2024. Part of the reason this jobs report was sort of surprising was because 2025 was such a dismal year, and there was this notion that developed around 2025, which was that we were in a low hire, low fire environment, which means that companies weren't really laying a lot of people off, but they certainly weren't hiring them, either. We got some revisions today, which showed that, over the course of the entire year in 2025, we only had about 180,000 jobs added, so to do 130 in one month really says something about the month of January. The big sector job growth was really limited to a couple industries, namely healthcare and social services. We did see pickups in manufacturing, and we also saw, at the same time, jobs slow down in some other big bellwether industries, like finance. Another reason the January jobs report is likely important has to do with the Federal Reserve and what it means for the Federal Reserve's decision to cut rates or keep rates stable next month during their March meeting. The January report really doesn't give the Federal Reserve much reason to cut rates when it meets in March, and we have to ask, is this just a one month aberration from low hire, low fire, or is this something new? It's a little bit too soon to tell, but this report today was really, really a positive one, and a step, I think, in the right direction.
