Who Is the Houthi Rebel Group Attacking Israel From the South?

Before October 7th, the Houthi rebels had never fired weapons at Israel, but in recent weeks they've been ramping up their attacks. They've fired various missiles and drones toward Israeli territory, they shot down a sophisticated American MQ-9 Reaper, and they even hijacked an Israeli linked cargo ship.

These attacks have earned the Houthis praise from Hamas and leaders are pledging even more of them. So who is the Houthi rebel group in Yemen and what threats does it pose in the Middle East? The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah or Supporters of God, are an Islamist militant group in Yemen, and like Hamas and Hezbollah, they have backing from Iran. Some experts I talked to say that the West has underestimated just how reckless and dangerous the group can be. This is their flag, which you see flown all kinds of Houthi rallies and events. It's on fighters, at funerals, and in parades. It echoes the group's slogan, "God is the greatest, death to America, death to Israel, curse the Jews, victory to Islam." Houthi supporters often chant this at their rallies and they're also known to champion the Palestinian flag and cause. Unlike Hamas, which says it belongs to the Sunni branch of Islam, the Houthis practice a form of Shia Islam more similar to Iran. But scholars say the Houthis and Hamas are aligned because they share a similar hard-line ideology and a desire to destroy Israel. And both groups have become politically powerful in their respective regions. The Houthis have been around for decades but their rise to prominence goes back to 2014. That's when its fighters seized Yemen's capital and forced the internationally recognized government out of power. That sparked a bloody civil war that morphed into a proxy war, with Saudi Arabia launching a campaign against the Houthis and Iran backing them. This war has absolutely devastated Yemen. More than 150,000 people have died, parts of the country have been demolished, and civilians have been forced to endure one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Now, Iran publicly denies supplying the Houthis with weapons but check this out. The US has repeatedly seized weapon shipments moving from Iran to Yemen, including large amounts of guns, rocket fuses, and ammunition. Back in 2021, the Trump administration designated the Houthis a foreign terrorist organization, but that move was quickly reversed by the Biden administration which said it would make it harder to address the dire humanitarian crisis. Earlier this year, in a China brokered deal between Iran and Saudi, Iran even agreed to stop arming the Houthis, which sparked hope that the war could wind down. But now the Houthis are back in the headlines and there is new pressure in the US to redesignate them a terrorist group. That's because the Houthis have been ramping up attacks on Israel and the US in retaliation for Israel's campaign in Gaza. The US says its ships have neutralized Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Israel says it has used its aerodefense system to intercept missiles fired at its territory. Northern Yemen is nearly 1,000 miles from Israel, which helps explain why many of the Houthis' aerial attacks are neutralized, but the Houthis have also been taking their attacks to the seas. In November, fighters landed a helicopter on the Galaxy Leader, a cargo ship with ties to an Israel businessman. They stormed the deck with weapons, took crew members hostage, and guided the ship back to Yemen, pledging to target more Israeli-linked ships in the future. Experts say the Houthis are likely to keep mounting these attacks and that October 7th has given them an opening to follow through on their anti-Israel position. And they'll keep attacking even if it complicates efforts to end Yemen's deadly civil war because, as one scholar put it, "These events give the Houthis even more legitimacy in Iran's so-called axis of resistance."
