Singles Are Finding Love in Unusual Places Online

Julie Chang: Welcome to "Tech News Briefing". It's Thursday, November 30th. I'm Julie Chang for the Wall Street Journal. One could argue, technology hasn't made dating any easier, the countless dating apps, scrolling through profile after profile, swiping left, swiping right. Dating app fatigue is real and some have turned to other platforms in search of romantic connections, like Yelp or Duolingo. Our personal tech reporter, Ann-Marie Alcantara has been looking into this, and she's with me now. Ann-Marie, can you tell us about one app a couple used and how they connected?

Ann-Marie: Strava's a social fitness type of platform where you can log whatever workout you're doing, and friends and other people you follow can just quickly comment and give you kudos or make comments, whatever they want. So there's Courtney and Peter who met at a race, but then they started following each other on Strava and giving each other kudos or leaving the first comment after a race and flirting that way until they eventually now live together in San Francisco and are dating full-time.

Julie: Okay, let's zoom out a little bit here. Who are the people using these apps and how exactly are they using them to find love?

Ann-Marie: So the people using these apps span generations. You know, we have Courtney and Peter who are pretty young, and then we have Mel and Terri who met on Yelp and they're a little bit older, you know, and then we have Rob and Amanda who met on Duolingo and they're sort of in the middle age group as well. And it just seems to be people who are looking for a connection, whether it's friendship or a relationship, and they do it either through language or on Yelp, reviewing restaurants, or Strava, you have a mutual interest in working out. And they end up finding people that share the same values as them.

Julie: What have the companies said about singles matching up on their platforms?

Ann-Marie: So a lot of them have told me that they don't necessarily track if this is a thing that's occurring often. They're, you know, honestly surprised when it happens and excited that it did. Yelp seems to be the platform where this happens the most, simply because there's Yelp Elite events where you know, if you reach a certain status on Yelp, you get invited to restaurants and bakeries and whatever it might be to test them out for the first time. And so you meet other people who are at Yelp Elite members and you see them a lot at these events. So a lot of people have met that way.

Julie: Does this tell us anything about the dating app industry more broadly?

Ann-Marie: The dating app industry seems to be something that people are really tired of, which is something we've all heard and maybe have experienced, where it's tough to find a date and someone that you like on these apps. Subscriptions are making them cost more, even if it's like a simple add-on. A monthly rate on Hinge can be around $50. And then there's an exclusive plan on Tinder that can be $500. So it can really range and be extremely expensive to find love on these apps. And it can be tiring, even though it seems silly, you're swiping right or left, but you're looking at faces and trying to decide, "Is this someone who could be the love of my life?" And it's not as easy as maybe some people think.
