Interviewer: What's one secret to a great bromance?

The secret to a great bromance?

Interviewer: Yeah.

Vulnerability. Any great kind of romance or bromance or anything, it's like you have to let the guard down and show your insecurities.

Interviewer: What's one guilty pleasure you have?

I don't have any guilty pleasures. I just have pleasures. The guilty pleasure, when people say, "Oh, it's a guilty pleasure," I'm like, "Why feel guilty?" I downloaded an two entire seasons of "Antiques Roadshow" for the flight that I just took to Australia. And people say, like, "That's not something you should download to watch on a 19-hour flight." But for me it is. It was fantastic.

Interviewer: "Clueless" was one of your breakout roles. What is one aspect of that time and that set that you look back on and realize you were totally clueless about?

I was clueless about pretty much everything. I mean, it's one of the very first things I had ever done. I kind of like look back and I miss that a little bit. You're excited about everything. It's all so new. It forces you like, oh, listen to other people and their ideas and be open and excited about learning all of this stuff and showing up every day and like, "Oh my God, I can't believe I'm here, that I got this job."

Interviewer: You are in a new movie with Jenna Ortega, "Death of A Unicorn."

Feral horse, mad, tumor-ridden, jumps in the middle of the road.

It's a fucking unicorn.

Interviewer: What's one thing Jenna taught you about Gen Z?

I can't claim to know much about Gen Z, but what I can say about Jenna Ortega is that she's pretty exceptional in just about every single way. You know, we would talk about music and stuff and she's like, "Oh, do you know Bill Fay? Or like, the Amazing Blondel?" She would send me these playlists of like, this is the most incredible music from the '40s, '50s, '60s. So if there's one thing that Jenna has shown me, is, oh yes, we cannot make generalizations about generations, or any group, really. That's probably a good rule of thumb to live by.

Interviewer: I have been told that you are a big fan of "Withnail and I."

Yeah. Huge, it's one of my favorite movies ever.

Interviewer: And that stars Richard E. Grant, who is also in "Death of A Unicorn." Was there one moment working with him where you were pinching yourself?

It really is an incredible thing when you get to sit with somebody like that. He's very forthcoming, and he would tell me stories about what it was like working on it. And every single time that would happen, I couldn't believe it. I'm like, getting, this is the greatest thing ever. And I had that throughout. I asked Richard, "Did you keep anything from the set? You know, did you keep anything from that movie?" He says, "I have the coat."

Interviewer: Maybe he'll let you borrow the coat sometime.

I would lose my mind. If I got to try on that coat, if I just gotta see that coat.

Male friendship is a theme in many of your movies. What is one thing you look for in a friend?

When I look at all of my friends and my friends throughout my entire life, I just think, like, sense of humor and empathy. You gotta have 'em both.

Interviewer: I was thinking you were gonna say musical talent. I feel like you're in a lot of boy bands.

No, my friendships, man, it does not require any kind of musical ability whatsoever.

Interviewer: Do you actually play guitar like you did the movie "I Love You, Man?" ♪ Today's Tom Sawyer ♪ ♪ He gets high on you ♪ ♪ And the space he invades ♪ ♪ He gets by on you ♪

I mean, I play guitar like an actor plays guitar, which is enough to entertain myself for a while, but not so great that anyone's gonna wanna sit around and listen to it. I wouldn't ever subject to anyone to having to listen to me play guitar. I'd be too self-conscious, and I wouldn't ever want to make anyone feel so uncomfortable that they had to sit there and go, "Oh yeah, sweet, dude, Simon and Garfunkel."

Interviewer: You are part of the exclusive SNL five timers club.

Yeah.

Interviewer: Is there one sketch that you would like the opportunity to do again?

I'll tell you one thing, actually, I would like to do over 'cause it, it always ate at me. It's a bit of a, probably a window into the way my brain works too. I got to host the show, and Paul McCartney was the musical guest, which is, I mean, come on, that's, where do you go from there? But I was so excited, I got on stage, and I just say... Well, this won't be topped. I realized after the fact it sounded as if I was including myself in that description, when really what I was saying was my own feeling toward doing "Saturday Night Live" with Paul McCartney. And afterward, when I realized that, and maybe the way it sounded, it kept me awake at night for six months. I'm like, "Oh no, I hated the way that sounded, if it was interpreted like that."

Interviewer: What's your favorite song of his?

Of Paul McCartney?

Yeah.

I was thinking about it the other day. I love "Penny Lane." Maybe "Penny Lane." But you know, that's Sophie's choice. "Name your favorite Beatles song?" Come on.

Interviewer: You can't pick wrong.

No, you can't pick wrong, but you also, it's so, I mean, it's just so impossible.

Interviewer: Who is one person that can make you laugh no matter what?

One person that always seems like, that always makes me laugh, that I'm always very interested in what they're doing. is Nathan Fielder. The very last episode of "Nathan for You," that's like an hour and a half long, is a masterpiece. I just think he's this fully-formed, brilliant comic mind and entity and I think he's hilarious.

Interviewer: What is one bit or joke you will never get sick of?

So there's this bit that my friend David does that I always make him do, he plays a guy who's just really into Peter Lugers Steakhouse. All right, you say you're a guy that's like, "I'm coming to New York and I'm looking for a good restaurant." And I'll just do what David does.

Interviewer: Hey, I'm coming to New York. What's a great restaurant? Where should I go?

Lugers. Lugers, gotta go to Lugers. And then I'll say, "I've heard like, Keen Steakhouse-" "Lugers." He doesn't think it's funny. No one else thinks it's funny, but it kills me.

That's amazing.

Interviewer: Medium rare?

Medium.

Interviewer: You're starring with your friend, Tim Robinson, in a new movie called "Friendship."

This is my neighbor Craig, he's the best.

Interviewer: What's one thing you would say about working with him?

I met Tim when he was a writer on SNL, and I've always thought he was hilarious. But to work with him in this capacity, I worked with him on "Friendship." One of the things we were starting was, he's like, "We gotta take out all the jokes." It's like, "Oh no, I don't wanna go for, like, the obvious funny jokes. That's not what this is about." And I think that, you know, the proof is in the pudding. The guy is totally fascinating and funny.

Interviewer: You don't have any social media. Has there been one moment where you wish you did?

The only times when it's like, ugh, are when people send me like a link to something or it's like, "You gotta see this." Or it's like some meme or whatever it is, and then they send it to me and I can't watch it because I don't have any. It's like if it's a TikTok or a Instagram or something and I can't, and it just doesn't, I can't play it, I don't-

Interviewer: How do you keep your pulse on what's cool otherwise?

I don't. I have no idea. There is a thing that happens where I do feel like the world operates in a way that is kind of passing me by.

Interviewer: You've been in at least five of Judd Apatow's movies. Which one stands out to you the most?

"40-Year-Old Virgin" really stands out, being that he directed it and the way he did it was really so fun to work on because it was just so different than everything else that came before it, where, you know, you get your sides and you memorize your lines and you, you know, you might be able to kind of add in or throw something in, you know, here and there, but not like that. I've loved every movie I've worked on with Judd.

Interviewer: Back in 2012, you were in the Judd Apatow film, "This is 40."

We're 40 years old. If we don't do it now, when are we gonna do it? Your eyes are kind of glazing over.

No, I'm just, I'm processing it all.

So many people now come up to me and they'll say, "'This is 40,' what a great documentary." And there are common themes that just, I think people relate to if they're, you know, 40 and they're married or have kids.

Interviewer: If you were to make a "This is 50" sequel, what's one thing you would focus on?

I think like with 50, some of the anxieties of life are trying to figure out some of those bigger questions get answered a little bit. The things that maybe start to happen, like entropy, your body breaking down, weird stuff like a hair growing out of the top of your ear or your teeth falling apart, like things like that, where you're like, "Oh my God." By the way, that did happen. I was like, it was so horrifying.

Interviewer: Do you wanna tell us that story?

No.

Oh.

I find that as I age and I get older, like, my world just gets smaller and smaller and I wanna make it smaller. And I think this probably falls in line maybe with a little bit of what I do and that I'm recognizable, but it's like, oh no, I just, I don't want to do anything, and I don't want to be, I just want to be, live a small life.

Interviewer: What is one thing that you're excited about right now?

That I'm excited about?

Interviewer: Excited about.

Sometimes they're a little lower key, you know. It's like, "Oh, my son is coming back from college. We're all gonna have dinner tonight." Like, that kind of thing. It's like, that's a like a lame, I know it's a nice answer, and it's the most boring answer, but it's the smaller things. I get more excited about that now than anything else.
