Olivia Dean sits down for The One with WSJ. Magazine to discuss her latest album “The Art of Loving,” winning Best New Artist at the Grammys and her relationship with her popular song “Man I Need.” She also chats about meeting Stevie Wonder, the lyrics she wished she wrote and more.

Why Olivia Dean Still Loves ‘Man I Need’ and More

I'd like to say journal, but sometimes I forget to journal. And sometimes when everything's crazy, it's hard to be like, "Today, I won a Grammy." You know, it's a bit much.

Olivia, what is the one opinion you will die on a hill over?

I don't really agree with the idea of like the one hit wonder being an insult. Not talking specifically about myself. I just mean... I just mean in general. Like, I feel like people are like, "Oh my god, she's a one hit wonder." It's like, yeah, because it's a fabulous song and it's become a wonder because everybody's enjoyed it so much. Like, I don't really think that's an insult. I think that's, like, slay.

What is the one song you are most proud of?

This kind of changes all the time. Something about "Lady Lady." Whenever I hear it, I'm like, "Wow, I'm really glad I got to make this." I think it feels really, like, cozy and spiritual and warm to me and makes me think about transitioning and, like, moving into a next part of your life and moving forward and having trust in the process and about the romance that you feel with yourself and the romance you feel when you think about your future. Every time I sing it and I look out into the audience, I'm like, "Yes, life is so beautiful."

"Man I Need" is arguably your most popular song. How has your relationship with it changed and evolved?

It's funny. I feel like maybe people would expect me to say that I'm, like, sick of it, but I love that song. And I wrote it because I wanted to have something that I could dance to and that would make me feel empowered and make me feel like, yeah, come be the man I need, but also I know you can be the man I need. So it's like, it works in so many ways. It's encouraging, but also self-empowered and I love singing it. So I still love singing it, and I'll probably be singing it for the rest of my life. And I think that's kind of beautiful.

You have met some pretty big names. Who is the one idol of yours that you are most excited to have met?

It has to be Stevie Wonder. I don't really think it gets any crazier than that. And it was like the night before the Grammys and I was singing at this Clive Davis party and I was so nervous and it's like I knew Joni Mitchell was in the room, I knew Stevie Wonder was in the room. Like, all the kind of biggest people you'd ever imagined to be in one place. And I came out and I did "Man I Need" and I saw a video of him and he was like clapping along and standing up and singing. And I was like, what's going on? And then I came off stage and then someone was like, "Do you want to meet Stevie?" And I was like, and then I went over and he shook my hand and he was like, "I love that song. Like, congratulations and just like, you're amazing. We should make a song." And I said, ah. So probably that moment was maybe the craziest moment of my life.

What is the one lyric you wish you wrote?

It's difficult. You know, I really like "diamonds on the soles of her shoes." ♪ Talking about diamonds on the soles of her shoes ♪

I think that's such a fun concept. Like, I don't know, falling in love with someone and she's so fabulous that she's got like diamonds on the soles of her shoes and it's like nobody can see them and they're just for her and that's how fabulous she is on the inside. And I think that's quite romantic.

What is the one lost art you wish came back in style?

God, there's a lot. This generation's a bit scary right now. I think going out on a Friday or Saturday night and like going to a bar and talking to someone with the idea of like flirting with them, like maybe taking them for a dance on the dance floor, spinning them around and saying, "Can I have your number?" And then following up in a really like nice way.

What is your opening line?

Me?

Oh, you want them to be doing that?

Well, I just mean... My opening line is, I don't know, probably a compliment I'd start with and a genuine one, maybe about something they're wearing or you love their dance moves or wow, you've got an amazing energy. Something like that.

In your opinion, what is the one key to love?

I think there's a few answers to this question, but one I was talking about with my friend the other day was that when you love someone or in a loving relationship with someone, I think you have to get all the things you're thinking in your head, all your anxious thoughts, you kind of sometimes just have to say them out loud because if you keep them to yourself, the feelings get trapped and they have nowhere to go. And then you create a narrative in your head that's probably not real or not that deep. So I think communicate, but actually just say all your things and actually that will bring you closer because then they'll love your weird bits too. Being weird together.

Any tips for people who are trying to open up?

Any tips people who are trying to open up?

From your research project on love.

From my research project on love. Research project is still ongoing. I don't know, it's scary. I think that's kind of hard to answer in a succinct way. I think practice, and even though you may have been hurt in the past, just continue to be open, and good people do exist.

What is the one book that has taught you the most about love?

Definitely "All About Love," bell hooks. I don't really think there's a book that compares in the way that it made me reframe the way I thought about love and thinking about it less about a fantasy or this kind of like magical feeling that just happens to you. And the way she talks about the idea of saying you're falling in love is actually kind of a flawed sentiment because I think that you choose love and you choose to love someone, and falling kind of makes it feel like you don't have control over it, when I think that you can.

Did I hear that that was a big inspiration for this album?

I think it was the pure inspiration. I'd been to see an exhibition by Mickalene Thomas that was in a response to the book. And then I was like, what if I did an album in response to the book and the exhibition? And I think it's gone quite well. So if you're looking for further reading, it's there.

Yeah, I always, whenever I'm out and I see people with the book, I'm like, oh, you're on the ride of your life.

I know, and I feel like it's a book that sometimes people have on their bedside table and they're like, "I'm reading it." And it's like, are you reading it, girl? It took me a while to actually get through it, and it's definitely sometimes kind of slaps you in the face. It's like, bell, please. But it's good.

What is the one creative decision that you're most glad you made on the album "The Art of Loving?"

I think that lyrically, also musically, but lyrically I was like, I'm gonna only say things that feel true and honest to me. I wouldn't say there's any lyrics on the album that I felt like I embellished or like made up some specific thing that never happened because it rhymed or I felt like it sounded cool. I was like, I wanna be able to sing this and go on tour and for me to have, like, true feelings to tap into. And that's why I think I love performing it so much, because it's just real.

Do you have a different emotional response every time you sing each of the songs?

Depends on the songs. Some songs I'm just like, every time I'm like, damn, this one hurts. But then other times, every time I sing "Man I Need," I'm like, yay. So it's kind of a spectrum of emotions, but it does change depending what's going on.

You recently won Best New Artist at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

I guess I wanna say I'm up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant. I wouldn't be here...

What was the one thought that went through your head when Chappell Roan said your name?

Honestly, just like LOL. No, I was like, oh my God, it's actually me. And like, I don't know if I'm the only one, but sometimes you, like, sit in your room and, like, you imagine going up on an award show or something like that. Do you know what I mean? And you're like, "Thank you, thank you." And then it was like it was actually happening to me and I'm looking out and it's like Miley Cyrus and Queen Latifah. And I'm like, it's now, right now is that moment. So yeah, it was mostly just LOL.

But hope and excitement, I'm sure.

Yeah, so much excitement, but mostly overwhelm, to be honest. I would say I kind of blacked out and then the next day I was like, damn, that really happened to me.

What is the one activity you do to celebrate milestones?

Probably just like drink a bottle of champagne. I don't know. I'd like to say journal, but sometimes I forget to journal. And sometimes when everything's crazy, it's hard to be like, "Today I won a Grammy." You know, it's a bit much. So I didn't even really write in my diary for a couple months after that. So probably just a glass of champagne.

It's hard to journal when you're really happy.

It is, and it's also hard to journal when you're really sad. I think I kind of need to be, like, neutrally reflective to journal. But recently I've kind of, like, figured out how to journal. Sorry, I'm going off on a tangent now, but I feel like this could be a good piece of advice. I used to write in my diary like, "Dear diary, today I did this" as if somebody else was going to read it. I don't think you're supposed to do that. I think you're supposed to just go stream of consciousness and not even think about yourself reading it back. And actually that's when it bangs because you really, like, clear your mind.

What is the one lesson you're still trying to learn?

So many lessons I'm trying to learn. I think, like, rest is okay and everyone deserves rest and time to have input so that you can have output. I think you're happiest in life when there's balance. So I'm trying to learn to sit down.

How are you carving out time for yourself on tour?

Just making the time to do things like yoga or going to see museums. We went to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm. It was fantastic. Love ABBA. You can, like, dance with their holograms and you can see, like, all their old tour merch and just, it was amazing.

You have become well-known for these gorgeous dresses. What is the one dress you still think about?

I think of them all all the time. And sometimes I'm like, "Well, will I ever wear you again? Where have you gone? Where did you go?" I wore a dress in Milan recently for my first ever show in Italy, and I wore two custom, like, Etro dresses and the second one was like this kind of mini dress, halterneck, multicolored, beaded, fringe. It was stunning. It's stunning. I don't know where she is now, but I loved her.

When did you remember making that decision that you were gonna be a dress girl?

I don't know. It's funny because when I was a little bit younger, I guess, you know when you're young and you're, like, trying to figure out who you are and you're like, "What's my personality? What do I like to dress like?" I wore a lot of baggier clothes and I used to have kind of long braids and like, I definitely experimented. And that was a cool era, but I think in the last couple of years, wearing dresses and heels has made me feel really confident and like I can step into this character almost kind of on stage and this elevated version of myself, and it's been really fun. And who knows, maybe my next era I'll go like crazy kooky, but right now this feels good.

Looking back, what is the one piece of advice you'd give your younger self?

Can I give two?

It's your younger self. And which younger self are you talking to?

I know. Just my general younger self, my previous versions of me. One serious one would just be like, keep going, don't look sideways, just look forwards and just love the people around you and don't worry about the other people and just go. And then the other one would be, you can only have two espresso martinis on a night out. You can only have two. Three takes it somewhere dangerous, and it's still coffee, and you can switch to decaf. You know what I mean?

So does two shots count as one?

I don't know how they make them behind the bar, but all I know is you can't have five on the night out because the next day is not the day you want to enjoy.

I won't ask anything else.

I think it says it all there. It was six.
