Teamwork Over Talent: Mavericks CEO on the Art of Individual Sacrifice

The thing that's fascinating about basketball, and you see it over and over again, and you already mentioned it with the Women's Olympic team, you can have a group of people who are the best players in the world and you can put them out there, and if they don't function as a team, they'll lose. And you can have people who may not be the best players of the world, but if they learn to operate as a team, they'll win. And I don't think there's a person sitting in this room who doesn't wrestle with exactly that conundrum. So we have you here tonight to tell us the secret. What is that special sauce that gets players to actually put themselves behind the team and understand the team goal?

I'm blessed with a associate named Steve Kerr, okay? Steve was our general manager when I was the president of the Phoenix Suns, the much storied coach of the Golden State Warriors now. We came up with a theme that really came out of the locker room, it was not a marketing theme, but to me, sums up everything, and that's strength in numbers. What Steve and our basketball folks were able to do is convince players that to be successful, to be a championship caliber team, despite what position you played, despite how many minutes you played, despite, you know, anything else about your talent, we can explain to you what your contribution needs to be, and if you make that contribution and every other player makes that contribution, we have a great chance for success.

So you can do it with data.

Well, data helps, but emotions help more. So imagine, you know, Steve's first year, he's never coached before, he comes in. We have this perennial all-star by the name of Andre Iguodala, who we had traded for the year before. And Steve, in his first year of coaching, goes to Andre and says, "You're an Olympic champion, you're a world champion, you're an NBA champion. Like, I'm gonna ask you to do something you've never done before. I don't wanna start you, I want you to come off the bench." And in the NBA that's, you know, there's a pecking order. Like the guys who start are the biggest stars, and the guys who come off the bench are support players. "So Andre, we'd like to ask you to come off the bench and do that." And he accepted that role. And he's looking around, you know, now we're looking around the locker room going, whoa, if he's willing to do that, like maybe I can play my role in a way. That was 2015. The story had an amazing ending. Andre ends up being named, as a sixth man, ends up being named most valuable player of the NBA finals, the Warriors win the championship.

Amazing.
