The Leadership Skill Wall Street Didn't Want to Hear About

You grew up in a world, I grew up in a world where the model was Jack Welch. I mean, he was the manager of the century according to the cover of "Fortune Magazine". You know, and he had a... He was not a man who believed in showing vulnerability. He was very much a top-down, you know, a rank and yank, which you complain about, was part of that whole management philosophy. Where did you learn this form of leadership?

I think it's a collection of experiences that I've had throughout my career. I've had the good fortune of working for a bunch of different companies, and I've worked for great leaders and terrible leaders. And the ones that empower the people and worry about where they are from the human level just always made me feel more connected to the company. And, you know, I've also had the exact opposite experience. I'm like, okay, that's a great way that I don't wanna lead. And you take those experiences together and then, you know, you read the research. Okay, I read psychology books for fun. I love the science of how people think and how it drives behavior and all of that. And I think that's why I love change leadership and transformation. And I said before, like, it's not a popular view. You know, Wall Street didn't wanna hear about our culture change either at the--

Alan: It was not a hot thing to talk about on earnings calls.

It was not. You don't get on an earnings call and say, I've got great news. We're teaching empathy. Right? They say, are you kidding me? You got $21 billion of debt. How are you gonna get out of this pickle? And, you know, you kind of subordinate the messaging around the culture and you talk about the things that you're gonna accomplish knowing that there's no way you're gonna get through that punch list without it, but we did.
