She Interviewed Fidel Castro. Now She Says Change Is Coming to Cuba

Here's Fidel Castro. Yeah, Fidel. The devil himself. I was the only Spanish television newscaster who was able to interview him in 65 years. He did not give any interview to anyone who spoke Spanish, and he did to me.

How do you describe your upbringing and your career before politics?

I was born in Miami in 1961. I'm the daughter of political refugees who had to come to the United States, for us, the best country on Earth, and gave us the opportunity to live here and to prosper here. So, in 1983, I was able to have the opportunity to be an international correspondent. Spanish television was flourishing in the United States because you had so many Hispanics coming in and it was a very captive market that very few people knew. I turned the viewers into voters and I knew my community very well. And here I am, a member of Congress, one of 435, representing the Cuban exile community in Miami.

And where's the regime today? How would you describe it?

Oh, well, you know, it's after 65 years because of the inaction and the lack of leadership from the United States. What JFK installed as the economic embargo, now Trump is really implementing that embargo.

How are you navigating with your constituents who still have family in Cuba? What are you saying to them as they grapple with what's happening?

I think they know that we are at the end and that this is the moment of explosion and that the sheriff at the White House will definitely finish the job because now the Cuban regime is just hanging by a thread.

How do you compare the situation between Venezuela and Cuba? Would you like to see happen in Cuba similar to the steps we're seeing now in Venezuela?

Well, the difference between Venezuela is that the Venezuelas have had communism for only 25 years and before that they had a stable democracy, so they remember what democracy looks like. And they had a very strong opposition leader called MCM, Maria Corina Machado. So she could lead the opposition forces 'cause she did it, she proved to the world two years ago that they had won the elections. Unfortunately, in Cuba, because their regime is so evil, every opposition leader throughout 60 years they have either put them in jail or they have killed them. We know so many of them, I covered many of them while I was on television. So Cuba is a different model, but they have the Cubans, they have my community to help with reconstruction.

Have you spoken to Secretary of State Rubio about the plans for Venezuela and Cuba as well?

He has said it clearly. It's you stabilize, you restore, and then you transition. The United States is not in the business of colonizing or oppressing or making any territory their own. The United States is in the business of liberating, and that's what we did.

Right now, the US is still deporting people though to Cuba and to Venezuela. Do you think they should? Do you support that?

Of course not, that's a mistake, we should not be doing that. We should not.

How do you feel that President Trump is handling immigration?

I think that Trump could be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery. Immigration has not been able to be fixed for the last 40 years. This country needs to start a national conversation as to what are we gonna do with those people who during 40 years, right, have been able to come in. Illegally? Yes, illegally, they broke the law. But stayed in the United States. These are human beings, right? Stayed in the United States, had American children, have been working in three key industries called agricultural, construction, and hospitality, which are 20% of our GDP. So what do I wanna give to you? Just come out of the shadows and I'll give you never path to citizenship, you are not going to be American. I am not gonna give you any federal programs. I am not gonna allow you to use our healthcare system. You have to pay for your crimes, you have to pay a fine, you have to give me 1% of your salary. And then I'm gonna give you the dignity status. It's not amnesty, it's dignity. It's not amnesty, it's dignity. And that's what the president, President Trump could definitely be the one signing that law.

Do you think the president understands this though as he continues to do this mass deportation?

I think the president understands more and more. We're making some inroads in the White House. I think he... There was a misunderstanding among some of his advisors.

Do you worry though that he is getting bad advice in his administration?

I think that Trump is the only elected official in the White House. Him and Vance. He is the responsible one.

Have you told him yourself the areas you disagree with him on this?

Listen, I have had very deep conversations with very important people.

When you say important people, would you say high people in his administration, in the White House that you've had these discussions with?

Listen, the White House understands that they need to look at immigration right now, that the border has been sealed. No one is coming in because the new sheriff in town. So now that same sheriff needs to finish the job.
