The Changing Landscape of Philanthropy

You mentioned philanthropy and how important that is to the museum. That world is changing. You've got the old donor class, the old grandies on Fifth Avenue, if you will, but now being replaced by the new young tech guys, for instance, or fintech guys. How are you navigating that change, Max?

Yeah.

Development?

So that's certainly a change or let's see a broadening of goals in philanthropy towards the museum. You could certainly argue that, let's say, 40 years ago, the people who supported the Met on a big scale were mainly collectors who were keen on seeing their collection or at least their area of passion properly represented in the museum. The Greek and Roman collectors gave to the Greek and Roman wing, the European paintings, French decorative arts, people went to this, that. We still have that, of course. But we have also many donors who, yes, they're somewhat interested in the arts, but they are most interested in the museum as a civic space. As a space where basically communities can come together as this, it's an institution that means something for New Yorkers. It's not so much part of a specific cultural identity, but really more of a great communal space that basically identifies the spirit of New York. And New York is a melting pot. New York as a convener of the many different cultures in the world. So in a certain way, the Metropolitan Museum could only have come into existence in New York, it represents New York. It represents this very global spirit of New York, and that's what a lot of artists care about. And then others care certainly about education and how we can disseminate our knowledge and make it scalable in a profound way. So they mainly, for example, support our digital platforms in that context.
