'The Fed Cannot Be A Political Body': Kevin Hassett

Let's play out a scenario here. We know where the president stands on rates. He makes it very clear very often. If you do become the Fed chair, Kevin, and he pressures you both privately, but publicly on Truth Social, or says it, and your economic judgment is, rates should not be cut now. What do you do?

You just do the right thing.

Poppy: What's the right thing?

Well, the right thing is if you think like, what is the judgment? So suppose that inflation is gone from say, two and a half to four. You can't cut rates then, but...

Poppy: So the oil...

You know, I mean like, I guess I could envision a computer model where there's such a huge positive productivity shock that you'd get away with it, but it's just very implausible.

So the loyalty, if you're Fed chair, would be to what the president wants, or to your economic independent judgment?

Yeah, to my judgment, which I think the President trusts and the firm commitment to not be partisan. And I worry that the Fed has been partisan. Like we haven't necessarily gone through all of the lists, but don't dismiss it out of hand that remember that President Trump was elected the first time, season one, and before he was even inaugurated, all of a sudden the Fed started hiking rates, even though there was a lot of evidence that they could have hiked rates ahead of the election. But then they were probably doing the right thing by waiting until after the election, because they didn't wanna look like they're, okay. But then the Fed didn't do anything when there was the runaway spending and inflation was going outta control. It finally did something about the runaway inflation right after Jay was renominated. There are a lot of things that look political in recent behavior of the Fed, and I think that's not acceptable. The Fed cannot be a political body.
