US Labor Market Update: Jobs Up, Openings Down

The US labor market has been on okay footing to start 2026, but it's been a bit of a mixed bag. Let's dig into the data. The US economy added 130,000 jobs in January, nearly doubling Wall Street's expectations. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 4.3%, down from 4.4% in December. This release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics calmed some fears that the labor market cooling of the past year was turning even colder. But job openings fell to 6.5 million at the end of December. That's the lowest level since 2020. So while it's true that the unemployment rate isn't soaring higher, the simple fact is it remains a tough labor market for those without jobs. Americans are feeling this pain. The latest Consumer Confidence Survey showed the most amount of respondents saying jobs are hard to get in nearly five years. For investors, this all serves as a reminder that while the labor market isn't flashing alarm signs right now and likely supports the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates steady for the next few months, whether the cooling in the job market turns to crashing remains a hot button discussion in markets right now.
