What I'm Watching For At the Biggest Fed Meeting of the Year

This is the most interesting Fed meeting of the year because it's Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's third meeting, but he's expected to do something different from the last two and that is he's expected to raise interest rates. Here are three things I'll be watching at this Fed meeting. First, an interest rate increase would be a big deal here, not just because they haven't raised interest rates in three years, but because Donald Trump put somebody in charge of the Fed earlier this year who he said was going to lower interest rates. The Fed cut rates three times last year, this would be the Fed taking back at least one of those moves. The second thing I'm watching is, does everybody support it? In July, the Fed held interest rates steady, but there were three dissents from presidents who wanted to raise interest rates. Dissents happen, but at a time like this when the Fed is under tremendous political pressure, it'll be notable to see how much support Kevin Warsh can build for whatever he decides. If the Fed raises interest rates but somebody says, hold on, I don't think we need to do this, that could create an awkwardness for the Fed chair because President Trump has been suggesting Kevin Warsh didn't want to raise interest rates and it was a hostile committee dragging him to do it. If this is a decision that Kevin Warsh owns, but somebody's saying, we don't have to do this right now, that could be a little bit of a crack in the armor around a unified Fed decision to raise interest rates. The third thing I'm watching this week is how does the Fed justify what they decide to do? If the Fed holds interest rates steady, that's going to invite a lot of questions at the chairman's press conference because markets overwhelmingly have anticipated a rate increase given everything that's happened in the economy and everything Fed officials said in the run up to this meeting. Kevin Warsh gave a speech last month that was widely anticipated and people though he tipped his hand toward a rate increase if the data came in as it did in the run up to this meeting, not really showing a convincing reason to think inflation is getting better. This is a wild moment for the Fed to raise interest rates because you've also seen the 10-year treasury yield hitting 5%. The bottom line is that borrowing costs are going up ahead of this fall's midterm elections. It's creating an unusually complicated set of circumstances as the Fed decides where it should set interest rates.
