Who Is Winning the Race for AI Supremacy—China or the U.S.?

China is ahead on deployment of AI, and they're investing like crazy. The Alibaba, the latest Alibaba, no actually Moonshot AI, which is a company everybody talks about DeepSeek. But Moonshot AI just released a trillion parameter model, which is essentially consistent with the size and strength.

Moonshot, everybody, write that down.

Of the model, Chinese company. It's on par, not quite as good, but on par, with some of our foundational models in the US. So, you know, we need to work hard to stay ahead.

And it changes. It's all quick, it changes rapidly, right? One day you're ahead, the next month you might not be.

Well, and then there's a question almost like what does ahead and behind mean? But at the end of the day, if we're ahead and they're moving faster, they're gonna catch up. So there's work for all of us as a nation to do on that. On the second bucket, on adoption, they actually are ahead. This is where the Alibaba Qwen model has more derivative models around the world than any of our foundational models. The Chinese strategy for this is not different from what they've done with telecom, which is, the equipment is not necessarily as good, but it's so much more affordable. The countries around the world end up choosing it because they simply cannot afford the top of the line things that we make here or for telecom in Western Europe. And so we need to accelerate. And the President's AI Action Plan actually talks to how we're going to accelerate exporting AI around the world. And I think that is really an important dimension that we as a country have not spent enough time on.
