Why AI Is In Its ‘February 2020’ Moment for Business

You shared an article last night on Twitter from someone called Matt Schumer, who's the CEO of a tech company, which has just gone gangbusters. I think I just checked before we came on stage: 41 million views. Can you just briefly in like one to two minutes, just summarize like what the article was and why you think it's important that folks should read it in our networking break?

Yeah, I would summarize this article as the stuff that Winston has been telling us for the last few years, somebody put into common language that everybody can sort of understand. So the article's called "Something Big is Happening." This is the first AI article that I've actually sent to my entire family. It starts with an analogy to COVID and it says, "Imagine February of 2020. There are niche corners of the internet talking about this virus that seemed to be spreading while the rest of us went about our business as if nothing was changing. Fast forward a month and life as we know it was completely upside down." And it analogizes to AI and it says, "We're in a similar moment right now," which for what it's worth, I completely agree with. Now there are three big differences between COVID and AI. Number one, AI is going to be much, much, much bigger. Number two, AI is going to be much more durable. COVID was a wave that came and went. AI is going to compound. And number three, and this is the most important one, everybody in this room and everybody who's read that article has a choice to make. With COVID, we didn't have a choice. We were all playing defense. With AI, we have a chance to play offense. It is gonna sideswipe a lot of people. This is the reason this article is important. Now is the time to make the choice to play offense.

That is quite remarkable to say, this is like a COVID level moment.

Pat: More.

There are.

Pat: Much more.

Larger than COVID. Like there are certainly people that say, you know, here in the Bay Area, especially in Silicon Valley, we kind of, you know, get caught up in the hype cycle and so on. But you're saying this is bigger than COVID.

All of technology as we know it today, is nothing more than these substrates on top of which AI will now be built.

Ben: Okay.

This is not just an important moment in the history of technology. This is an important moment in the history of humanity.
