Why Are Democrats Split Over a Vote to End the Government Shutdown?

Congress is making progress toward ending the longest ever shutdown in federal government history. The Senate voted 60 to 40 late on Sunday, to advance some legislation that would reopen the government.

The motion upon reconsideration is agreed to.

What happened is you had eight Democrats voting with Republicans largely.

We took a big step forward to protect the healthcare of tens of millions of Americans in exchange for funding through January 31st.

Democrats, one of the things they've really been wanting is an extension of expanded subsidies for health insurance, for people who are in the Obamacare, or ACA marketplaces, right, who are buying insurance. And Democrats did not get an extension of that. They didn't get anything like that.

We're not gonna support partisan Republican spending bill that continues to gut the healthcare of the American people.

We're expecting the house to pass this, but the house is also messy. The house operates on a pure, simple majority. So if Speaker Mike Johnson can keep all of his Republicans together on this bill to reopen the government, when the house comes back to Washington later this week, they'll have enough votes to do it and then send it to the president. This has been the longest shutdown in US government history, and we've seen the effects of that cascade and build over time. We've seen the, the flight delays in air traffic controllers not coming in over the past week or so. The FAA ratcheting back how much airspace is available. We've seen the controversy over full payment of SNAP benefits, food assistance for November, and then you've also seen a lot of other federal workers, hundreds of thousands of them furloughed and staying home and not getting paid. So those effects have been really building over time, and the end of the shutdown will kick off the process of unwinding some of the damage of that and it's not going to be instantaneous.
