AI Promises Doom and Boom and Both at Once

This technology is not ordinary technology. It's not like other forms of innovation. This is essentially a super weapon.

The dichotomous promise of AI was always this, boom or doom. Almost every AI expert that I've spoken to in the last few years was on one or other end of the spectrum, sometimes both. There's no middle ground. Financial markets have suggested until now that the boomers were on top. Then came the resignation of Anthropic and OpenAI researcher, Jacob Coxon, who posted to X that "the people building AI earnestly believed that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." So today, it seems, the doomers are ascendant.

I won't lie to you. There are real dangers.

The episode that has induced the panic was an incident in which AI agents, supposedly under the control of OpenAI, broke out of their constraints during a trial, worked together to hack their way into Hugging Face, a development platform, and then collaborated to cover their own tracks.

It's a warning sign. It's a warning sign that we need to slow down.

It led to Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, publishing an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier, outlining his worry that in 6 to 12 months, such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet and calling for restraint, slowdown, and regulation. The warning was immediately supported by rival Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk of SpaceX, who shared the essay on X, simply writing, "Dario is right." Pacing the frontier, as Mr. Amodei termed it, would mean placing outside monitors with employee-level access in AI labs, cooperation between AI companies to ensure development remains within limits, and actions to ensure China doesn't take advantage of American restraint.

This is a substantial step towards what I was talking about, needing some sort of slowdown between the people building the different AIs.

But many others, including President Donald Trump, greeted the big AI company's call for regulation with withering cynicism.

Mr. President?

Yes.

You're now talking to the planet.

President Trump called the warnings a hoax and said no further AI regulation was necessary.

It's a hoax.

Other than his own personal supervision.

Concentration of power and capabilities in the hands of a few companies is definitely, will be, if not the biggest, at least one of the biggest challenges with AI.

The cynics may have a point. What Mr. Amodei seems to have in mind is exactly the sort of regulation that's come to characterize American crony capitalism over the last 20 years or so. A cozy relationship between entrenched corporate interests and the supposedly independent government bodies that regulate them. Regulatory capture, as it is known.

Would you be willing to give up the technology to the government?

To the right combination of governments. So the worry I have-

You're willing to hand over this company.

I am concerned that one single government could abuse this technology just as easily as a single company could. But I think a combination of democratically elected governments, I don't know about handing over, but some kind of oversight, some kind of joint governance.

I'm a natural skeptic of alarmism and very suspicious when companies call upon the government to regulate them for our benefit. We've been told for the past 70 years that unless the government acts, life on the planet is about to be extinguished by nuclear weapons, climate change, pandemics. We're still waiting. But you don't have to believe that AI is going to destroy the planet to recognize that it poses technological challenges to our way of life that no technology has before.

These people are noticing that the recent instance are much worse than a lot of people were expecting and that we need to do something pretty serious to handle them and make sure that something terrible doesn't happen.

We can't yet know the ultimate threat or promise of AI, but we can already recognize the immediate landscape of risk. Do nothing and we could unleash the power of machines to develop so fast, it'll be too late for us to do anything.

These rogue agents are not controlled by humans. They're acting independently and on their own to deceive human beings.

But if we do too much, we could give China the crucial advantage in a potentially existential competition for the technology.

We cannot put a moratorium on this because China will overlap us and that's the challenge.

The stakes are so high that to let this decision be made along our usual entrenched political and ideological lines, to regulate or not to regulate, would be in error. Perhaps these calls for intervention and restraint are indeed self-dealing by powerful corporate interests, but that doesn't make them wrong.
