I think that removing Churchill from bank notes is erasing our history.

If you're looking for a metaphor for the decline of Western civilization, you could do worse than the news that Winston Churchill, who's often likened to a bulldog or a lion, may soon be replaced in Britain's public esteem by an actual squirrel. Bank of England has announced that the next set of bank notes it produces won't feature images of great figures from Britain's political, scientific, and literary past. Instead of Jane Austen, J. M. W. Turner, Alan Turing, and Churchill, who now grace the reverse of the side featuring the Monarch, there will in future be a menagerie of as-yet unidentified British wildlife.

Apparently, these new bank notes, when they do come in in a few years' time will have enhanced measures to prevent counterfeits.

Really?

They genuinely believe. It seems the experts in the city genuinely believe that a drawing of an otter is harder to fake than drawing of Winston Churchill.

Well, in that case, just have Winston Churchill holding an otter. Surely that is the answer.

In case you hadn't noticed, Churchill, Turing, and Turner were all white males. Austen, of course, was a white female. And it strikes me that having valiantly elevated Turing as the first gay man to be so honored in the last round of bank note revisions, DEI-vigilant folk who run most of Britain's public institutions couldn't come up with a widely recognizable black or brown-skinned lesbian or a prominent Muslim to take their rightful place on the tenner. So, going with the line of least resistance, they're opting for the inclusive safety of tawny owls and water voles. The Bank of England is now committed to a second consultation exercise in which it will ask respondents for their favorite animal. Now, this is a risky activity in Britain, where such exercises can get hijacked by anarchic satirists.

It gives me great pleasure to name this ship Sir David Attenborough.

Gerard: That new polar scientific research ship could have ended up being called Boaty McBoatface had the landslide results of a 2016 public consultation exercise conducted by the National Environment Research Council been obliged.

A little part of you, Sir David, actually missed the fact that we didn't call it Boaty McBoatface. I mean, does your sense of humor extend that far?

Well, I leave that to others.

It's easy to laugh. Perhaps the disappearance of history's icons from a depreciating currency isn't a fatal blow to the canon of British culture that it might look. But in my recent visit to Britain, it wasn't the only sign of a national identity crisis.

So, today, we are adopting a non-statutory definition of anti-Muslim hostility. This gives a clear explanation of unacceptable prejudice, discrimination, and hatred targeting Muslims so we can take action to stop it.

Just after that announcement came the news that a local government in the north of England had instructed school teachers there not to encourage school children in classrooms to draw any pictures that might be offensive to Muslims.

I don't think we talk about how lost the UK is and whether it's too far gone to be fixed.

A booklet of guidelines titled Sharing the Journey said teachers shouldn't instruct children to "reproduce images of Jesus, the Prophet Mohammed, or other figures considered to be prophets in Islam," lest the large and growing Muslim communities in that region should take offense.

Why would you need to have these sort of advisories? These schools aren't operating in a Muslim majority country.

Well, I think you've answered your own question.

Clearly, they could easily be or may as well be, you know.

I also watched as the new member of Parliament from the Manchester area took her seat in the House of Commons

Four weeks ago today, I was in college, a plumber learning how to plaster, and today, I'm in Parliament as an MP.

In February, Ms. Spencer became the first Green Party candidate to win a parliamentary by-election. Now, oddly, the English Greens no longer preach about the climate catastrophe that was recently supposedly going to wipe out humanity.

To my trans siblings who get blamed for everything.

Instead now, they are the repository of a growing number of radical, progressive causes and are especially popular in communities with large immigrant populations who have been vocally hostile to Israel. In her maiden speech in the Commons, Ms. Spencer identified the scapegoating of Muslims as one of the key challenges that faces the country.

To the Muslims everywhere who are constantly and often violently scapegoated.

This at a time when expressions of Anti-Semitism have become commonplace in Britain.

I shouldn't exaggerate with these three small snapshots from a small island off the coast of Europe, but it's clear that the elites that still have the country in their grip remain committed to the slow eradication of the nation's traditional values, wiping away problematic historical heroes, suppressing Christian iconography, even as they demand protection for the followers of a different Abrahamic faith.
