WSJ Opinion: Jimmy Lai’s Family Campaigns for His Release

My father has committed no crime. My name is Sebastien Lai. My father is Jimmy Lai, the pro-democracy campaigner and publisher who has been in a Hong Kong prison for the last five years in solitary confinement. He's had a slew of charges ranging from lighting a candle and saying a prayer at a Tiananmen Square Massacre vigil to commemorate the people who died in 1989. For that, he got, you know, close to a year in maximum security prison. For the most recent one and the most serious one, for which he just got 20 years, and that is two counts of attempting to collude with foreign forces and one count of sedition, all of which relates to his peaceful pro-democracy campaigning and his work as a journalist. He's 78. They've dragged this trial out for many years, and there was no jury, three government-appointed judges, allegations of witnesses getting tortured. A real show trial nationally and internationally condemned. At this point, the 20-year sentence is a death sentence because my father is 78. He's not in good health. He's being kept in horrible conditions. So if something isn't done for him to be freed, he will die in prison. He's in a maximum security prison. All of the time that he's been in prison, he has been kept in solitary confinement. 14 days of solitary confinement is considered a form of torture. He has been in there for now close to 2,000 days. As a result of these horrible conditions, of this little cell, he now has heart issues. His nails and teeth fall off during the summer because of the brutal heat. Really incredibly torturous conditions. He's been treated worse than other people who are in maximum security prison. They know that his faith is very important to him. As a result of that, he's not allowed to attend mass. And for a long stint of time, they also denied him the right to communion. All of that is aimed to break him mentally, physically, and spiritually. His health has gotten much worse, but mentally and spiritually, he is still very strong. You know, we've been so incredibly grateful that the president has been so supportive. You know, he has this incredible track record of freeing people around the world. I hope that he tells President Xi that it's not in his benefit for my father to die in prison. In a sense, my father's story is a very American story. You know, he escaped from oppression, from Communist China when he was just a child, arrived into Hong Kong and started off working in a factory, in a textile factory, and then became very successful. After the Tiananmen Square Massacre, he knew that he had to do something to defend the freedoms that gave him so much. So he started this newspaper called "Apple Daily" with the idea that information is choice, and choice is freedom. In the inaugural editorial of "Apple Daily," there were these words that said, "Are we not scared of the handover?" in 1997, when the UK was gonna hand Hong Kong back over to China. And the phrase said, "Of course we are scared, but we refuse to be intimidated by fear." And that's what my father lived by. That's what him and his fellow journalists lived by. When our house was firebombed, when my father was followed, when he had assassination plot foiled, he refused to be intimidated by fear. And when they came and grabbed him from our family home in 2020, he refused to be intimidated by fear. And so when any American, or indeed, anybody in the world who enjoys the freedoms that my father's fighting for thinks, you know, "What are these freedoms? What is these freedoms tangibly? What is it worth?" I think you look at the story of Jimmy Lai, of this man who knows exactly what he's fighting for and refuses to be intimidated by fear.
