In Defense of Umpires

Robots are breaking baseball. I hate the new Automated Balls and Strikes system. It destroys the pace of play. You go to a game and suddenly an audit breaks out. It also hurts the integrity of the sport. The new technology, also known as the robotic umpire, ignores the history and the humanity of baseball. Baseball is not a science, it's an art. Its great drama is based on the fallibility of the human beings on the field, and that has always included the umpires. Chief Justice Roberts is right, the job of the umpire and the job of the judge is to call balls and strikes. A civil society requires that we accept the decision, even when we don't agree with it. The ABS system stinks. Like a lot of technology, it promises of perfection by replacing human beings, and in so doing, threatens to destroy the best things human beings ever created.
