The Economics of Immigration

There is no topic where economics doesn't have some unique twist on the subject.

Everyone's seen it in the news. Trump is promising the largest deportations in American history.

We are delivering.

And it's all under the guise of keeping criminals off the street. But as an economist, I can't help but ask myself the question, is the law and order preface the right one and what are the economic consequences of mass deportations? A lot of the discussion about immigrants and crime is treating immigrants as some fixed static entity that doesn't respond to incentives. Economists believe, starting with the work of Gary Becker, that if the benefits to committing a crime are greater than the costs, people will commit crimes. There's nothing special about undocumented immigrants. It's the same for inner city America. It's the same for folks out in the sagebrush. It's not about morality. It's about basic incentives. And in fact, what we've seen is pretty clear, even undocumented immigrants don't cause crime to increase. If anything, it's slightly lower amongst that population and mass deportations remind me of Stigler's famous Marginal Deterrence. If you have the same penalty for robbing someone as you do for running a stop sign, then there's no incentive to do anything besides rob anybody because it's the same exact penalty. If everyone that is an undocumented immigrant, no matter how long they've been here, whether they're paying taxes and coaching soccer teams, if everyone is treated with one broad brush and threatened with deportation, then we shouldn't be surprised if people's behaviors are counterproductive. If playing by the rules doesn't make sense, then why play by the rules? The other side of that coin is if you make it very, very attractive to be an undocumented immigrant in America, what do you do about the border? If economics has taught me anything, is that the solutions are usually not at the extremes. There is a way to have real border enforcement, and, not or, real integration into American society of the immigrants that are here. There's a difference between illegal border crossings and people who've lived their whole life here and their children who have lived their whole lives here. If we want to make our communities safer, then we have to treat immigrants as future citizens and not as outcast. I just wish we had a little bit more empathy, and I hope that we'll think of these things through an economics lens and not just a political one, and set up a system where those who want to live with American values can have a productive life here.
