Trump, King Charles and Saving the ‘Special Relationship’

Your Majesty, the wounds of our parting in 1776 healed long ago. Americans admire the United Kingdom as one of our truest allies and best friends.

When King Charles III's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, came here to celebrate America's 200th birthday in 1976, Britain was already in free fall. Its economy was ravaged by stagflation, militant trade unions and fiscal incontinence. Political leadership was a tired, bickering rump. 50 years later, the 250th anniversary of America's independence.

Americans have had no closer friends than the British.

And the world's longest-running historical irony, the so-called special relationship, that sees the king on his first state visit to the US attempt to help repair some of the frayed ties between the two countries. And in doing so, he exploits the very modern irony that the world's most powerful republic finds an old monarchy's hereditary king more congenial than its elected leader.

There has been some strained relations 'cause of things happening internationally, but I think the king's visit is very perfectly timed. I think he sees it that same way. President Trump is furious with what he sees as insufficient British support for the Iran War.

I'm the prime minister of the United Kingdom, and I make my decisions based on what's in the British national interests.

This is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with.

Enter the king. Can he persuade Mr. Trump and his compatriots that Britain's game is worth the candle?

And the Oscar goes to Jessie Buckley.

Americans could be forgiven for wondering what is the point of the old country, beyond some fine costume drama, a smattering of challenging golf courses and a cheap alternative for their children's education.

Today, Britain's decline from global superpower to minor-league straggler chose no sign of stopping.

We see you as our strong and trusted friend.

Following the queens state visit in 1976, the UK saw a brief economic resurgence under Margaret Thatcher, and an even briefer moment of supposed cultural leadership under Tony Blair. But since then, Britain has sunk back beneath the waves it no longer rules. Its share of global economic output has shrunk from 5% 50 years ago to just 3% today. No voter on this continent went to the ballot box to open the floodgates to millions of unvetted immigrants. The caricature of Britain as a country and the grip of sharia law and under the heel of an authoritarianism that locks up citizens for saying nasty things about it is a little overdone, but there's no doubting the cultural and political malaise.

Multiculturalism makes no demands of the incomer to integrate. It has failed because it allowed people to come to our society and live parallel lives in it.

Decades of self-loathing multiculturalism, mass immigration, declining birth rates, and the elite systematic degradation of national pride and traditional values have produced a nationwide enemy and rising popular discontent. But the truly shocking indicator of decline is in Britain's military capability.

They're toys compared to what we have.

Mr. Trump was characteristically cruel when he derided the Royal Navy's vessels back in March. But years of complacency after the Cold War have reduced the number of warships in the successor to Admiral Lord Nelson's fleet from more than 100 in 1976 to just 25 today.

For three decades, many did not have to think about the armed forces. Peace was stable, conflict was distant, but that is no longer true. I would argue that the situation is more dangerous than I have known during my career, and the price of peace is rising.

Meanwhile, the British Army has seen its numbers cut to the lowest number since the Napoleonic Wars.

We are now operating in a space between peace and war.

Arguably Britain's strategic value to the United States has declined even beyond these numbers.

We are absolutely clear now that there is no way that the remain side can win. The British people have spoken and the answer is, "We're out."

Having voted to leave the European Union and strike out on its own, it's spent the last 10 years demonstrating no idea of where it is or where it wants to be. The procession of prime ministers, six in 10 years, has been comical. So, Your Majesty, what's the point?

Pretty much more than any other visit, this is about the long term, this is about the fundamentals of the relationship between our peoples, our countries. It's not about what's going on today, or tomorrow, or the short term.

As a native born Englishman, I will aver that of course Britain still has some virtues. Its cultural output remains peerless. It has the world's greatest universities. The technology sector is a sole economic bright spot. UK is now the third-largest market for investment in artificial intelligence.

America's words carry weight and meaning, as they have since independence. The actions of this great nation matter even more.

The king must surely appreciate the irony, a man whose job it is, "To do nothing in particular and do it very well," in the words of those Great Britons, Gilbert and Sullivan, must persuade a skeptical America that his kingdom is more than a place of colorful pageantry, glorious medieval castles, and the never-ending entertainment provided by a soap opera of the world's most famously dysfunctional family.
