When ‘60 Minutes’ Is an Hour Too Long

It's hard to compare this to anything, other than something that actually could happen to your family.

Will America survive the murder of "60 Minutes"? Will the world? The brutal homicide of America's longest-running television news magazine was reported at the beginning of June by its immaculately quaffed and richly compensated frontman, Scott Pelley, for the crime of exposing this act of violence against journalism, truth, and freedom. Mr. Pelley was shown the door at the Tiffany Network after 37 years. These are dark days, indeed. If they can eliminate in plain sight an institution essential to the survival of the republic as Mr. Pelley and his carefully-chewed spectacles, surely no one is safe. Forgive the sarcasm. Perhaps Mr. Pelley and his long career deserve more respect.

My colleagues and I have worked together 10, 20, 30 years.

But can we, at least for a moment, be proportionate, and unlike so much of what Mr. Pelley and his colleagues have done, be objective?

When somebody wipes out, murders a large number of your family members...

Apparently not. Mr. Pelley's hysterical reaction and that of many of his colleagues in the media came in response to some editorial changes made by a new team at CBS News led by Bari Weiss, its president, whose sin, apparently, is to want a different sort of journalism from that that's been practiced at CBS and almost all other traditional media organizations for decades.

Personalities and influencers have overtaken 100-year-old journalism brands in only a few years. It's an exciting and fascinating moment.

The reaction should, but sadly won't, be studied by journalism schools as an unwitting testament to the failure of the news business. But more importantly, it is evidence of how astoundingly ill-informed and unaware media elites are about the role they play in American life and how and why it has changed so drastically.

Smartphones have changed how people get news dramatically in the 21st century, and no group shows that shift more clearly than young adults. People under 30 are shaping how information spreads and giving us a possible glimpse into the Future of News.

Someone on X, mourning the alleged demise of "60 Minutes," a TV show that was started in 1968, 177 years after the ratification of the First Amendment, described the show as, quote, "The historical leader of the free press."

Good evening. This is "60 Minutes." It's a kind of a magazine for television.

Now, we're all prone to recency bias, but this is really quite something. Today, "60 Minutes" average is about 9 million viewers or 3% of the US adult population, but those who think the traditional news networks have anything like the role they had 50 years ago are living in a fantasy.

Nearly eight in 10 young adults say that they get news on social media, compared with less than three in 10 of the oldest adults. And notably, young adults trust the news they see on social media more than older groups do. Half of people under 30 say that they tend to trust the information they see there, the same share that say they trust the information from national news outlets.

It's regrettable, in some ways, that we no longer live in a country where the bulk of the population gathers each night or each week to absorb common and shared sources of information and news, rather than the disaggregated choose-your-own-news model that we have today. But why is this democratic informational utopia no more?

Billionaires only get rich by stealing from us. And what they're doing with these layoffs is so shameful and so sickening!

Because it was killed by the same people who cry bloody murder about attempts to make long overdue changes to these decaying institutions. For decades, they promoted a patently one-sided form of journalism that most of the audience came to see as highly partisan. I'm not crazy about corporate bosses cringing before political power to advance their own interests, as may be happening at CBS. But again, can we get a sense of proportion about the reality of the media landscape? You and I may not like the method, but any abeyance to President Trump is producing only incremental shifts in the wider media picture. The American news environment is vast and expanding. If viewers think they can no longer trust CBS News, they can read, watch, or listen to literally thousands of other TV shows, podcasts, newspapers, social media influencers, and more. It is vanity in every sense of the term to think that they are somehow less trustworthy, but a news organization dominated by one partisan political viewpoint.

We were met with cold, callous indifference to what anyone thought.

Millions of Americans lose their jobs every year because of necessary corporate decision-making, but they don't provoke it by denouncing their employer publicly. But when it's a TV personality, it's a crime scene.
