Evaluating China Risk

A lot of my clients are drawing a straight line between a third of global growth, which comes from China, and what their stock investments mean in the US. And yes, China's a third of global growth but there's relatively little sales from US corporations that happens in China. And when you look at the economy wide sales or profits from China for US companies, is only about 2%. So yes, the slowdown there is happening. It's very real and it's likely to be a generational de-leveraging process in China. I think it's gonna be really minimal impact for earnings for the corporations that we invest in in the US.

But Tom, if you take a look at companies like Apple, Tesla, Lululemon, Nike, they're all very reliant on China. So what are the implications there?

Yeah, I think there are specific companies, Caroline, to your point, that are very well connected and stitched in the fabric of China. But to think about, we buy stocks in America 'cause they create earnings. Simply the slowdown in China and what it might mean there for specific companies is real. But for the aggregate diversification that we have, I think quite small. Your points about specific names, agreed. That's a very real conversation. But in aggregate, it's not a reason to be scared of the market. It might be a reason to fade some of your exposure in certain names.
