Assessing Economic Headwinds 

What is the biggest risk to the economy at this point?

I think the biggest risk right now is that monetary policy and fiscal policy don't appear to be moving in the same direction. Monetary policy is desperately trying to tighten credit, desperately trying to tap down consumption, tap down investment in order to slow the economy and reign in price pressures. But what we're still seeing is very supportive fiscal policy, expansionary fiscal policy providing additional support to the consumer. So arguably moving in the opposite direction of what the Fed would like to see, complicating the process of reinstating price stability. So the more temporary supports we see from the fiscal side arguably the higher the Fed will need to raise rates or hold rates at that elevated level for even a longer period of time in order to get inflation back under control.

And speaking of risks, how are you weighing the risk of China's sluggish economic recovery and potential spillover from that?

Well, I don't think it's just China, I think when we look at the global economy the risk is certainly to the downside when we talk about growth in Europe. Talk about growth in the UK, amid the threat of elevated energy prices, sluggish consumer, the same threats that we're facing here in the US, I think the global outlook certainly is to the downside with very minimal growth prospects not just in China, but across much of the developed world.
