Is Happiness at the Top? A Look at Leaders, CEOs, and Politicians.

Let's just start with leaders, CEOs, maybe presidents of the United States. Do they generally exude or are they more happy and unhappy? How do they write? So that is exactly what we were talking about a minute ago. They tend to be high affect people. Leaders in America in particular tend to be extroverts. They tend to feel things very deeply, and that means that they are usually above average in positive affect, in positive emotion, but they're also above average in negative emotion. This is how we ascertain that they're deeply involved in what they're doing. One of the reasons people vote for politicians is because they look really involved in everything. One of the reasons that people wanna follow charismatic leaders is because they have such deep feeling about things. And the reason for that is that indeed they have very intense, both positive and negative emotions. They tend to be mad scientists. And so in my class at HBS, at the Harvard Business School, which is called Leadership and Happiness, one of the most important skills I can give the future Mad Scientists of America who wanna grow up and be the audience to this podcast is to learn how to self-manage their own intense levels of both positive and negative emotions.

Follow up on that though, is the extreme version of Mad scientists bipolar even?

Well, so that's an interesting point. So bipolar disorder it has very much to do with oscillating and grand waves between, between depression and hyperactivity or mania, is what it's known clinically as. There's a subclinical designation called hypomania, which is not bipolar. It's not bipolar disorder, it's not a mood disorder at all, but it's a subclinical version of that where people feel things very, very deeply. And that's where Mad side just tend to be. By the way. That's also where we find most of the entrepreneurs, the most inflecting entrepreneurs in the United States and around the world, they tend to have this hypo, it's what's called in my business, the Hypomanic Edge. These are the people that are all in baby, and when things are wrong, they're really wrong. And when things are right, they're really, really right. And a lot of people listening to us right now are going, oh wow, Arthur really knows me. Yeah, I see you man. I see you.
