Sen. Cassidy on How Lessons From Covid Led to School-Choice Tax Credit

I wanna ask you about the Big Beautiful Bill, which recently Congress passed, you voted for that. In it was your Educational Choice for Children Act, which is the first federal school choice bill signed into law. Why is that so important?

Oh, it's so important. I think the COVID pandemic showed us why. There were schools that were shut down after it was stated that it's safe to reopen. They were still shut down. So a parent who wanted to send her child to school and the Public Health Authority said, it's so safe to open, and the public school wouldn't open. And down the street would be a private or parochial school, and kids were going there. She did not have the money to attend, to send her child. She's trapped between a bureaucracy that won't open a school, even though public health says it's safe to, and the lack of resources to send her child where they could get the better education, or at least an education. With this program, we allow a scholarship program to be set up in all 50 states in which she could apply for that scholarship to help pay for her child to attend one of these schools. That is powerful. I wanna be pro-family, pro-worker, pro-patient, across the spectrum of what we need for society. And this is pro-family. If that child can go to the school that her mom or her dad picks, and that child achieves his or her potential, that changes that child's life, it changes that family's future, it changes the future for our society. And I'm about that family achieving their potential. And this is using the power of the tax code to help achieve that. By the way, it does not take dollars away from public education. This is a separate funding stream from public education that still gets the money. It's an additional pot of money that can be used to educate our children.
