Doctors Explain Trump’s Vein Condition

Many in the media have been speculating about bruising on the president's hand, and also swelling in the president's legs.

That's a classic venous insufficiency, swelling of the ankles.

Chronic venous insufficiency refers to a disease where the veins, which normally return the blood to the heart, and all veins have delicate, one-way valves that keep the blood moving north back to the heart. In chronic venous insufficiency, these valves are not working well and their veins are weak and blood is backing up and causing symptoms of aching, heaviness, swelling. It is actually quite common, about 10 to maybe 35% of all Americans have some degree of chronic venous insufficiency. There's certainly a genetic component to this. People over the age of 55, we certainly have patients who, obesity is another common risk factor for this. People who stand for long periods of time or sit for long periods of time.

His age, and obviously, he's probably spent a lot of time on his feet, and that's why he's been developing chronic venous insufficiency.

I like to say if we all live to be 500 years old, we'd all have varicose veins and we'd all have leg swelling. I think that, you know, we all are subject to gravity, and as we're on our feet for long periods of time, and go into about our day, we have a lot of stress placed on the veins and so, you know, there's wear and tear involved there. The most important sort of dangerous condition that sometimes can cause chronic venous insufficiency, which maybe many people are aware of, is what's called a DVT, or a deep vein thrombus, or more commonly a blood clot in the leg.

Importantly, there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.

The physicians in the White House have clearly labeled it chronic venous insufficiency, meaning they've ruled out other causes of swelling, such as heart failure, such as kidney disease, such as liver disease. So this is clearly what the president is having.

It is not an emergency, it's not a four-alarm fire.

I don't think it's going to affect him in any way other than symptomatic problems in terms of heaviness of the legs is probably the main symptom that he's gonna feel. With someone like President Trump who's very proactive, likely he'll wear stockings and he'll likely have relief of his symptoms as long as he listens to his doctors.
