Would You Swim in the Seine? Our Paris Reporter Took the Plunge.

So, we're here in the heart of Paris where I'm about to do something I never thought I would. Swim in the Seine River. Swimming has been banned for a hundred years because of boat pollution and sewage. And for the first time this summer, swimming is actually allowed.

I thought I was gonna cry. I might cry right now. Yeah. 'Cause it's just so beautiful from this angle. And it also feels like it could be any time in the world and history. It could be any time when you're just in the water and looking at these buildings and these trees.

So for decades, politicians here in Paris have pledged to clean up the river. Athletes for the Olympic Games last year got a chance to dive in and Parisians now can do the same. Authorities have invested over a billion euros to clean up the river and mainly to make sure that wastewater no longer flows freely in the Seine River. They built a large tank where wastewater and rainwater are stored when there is a heavy rain and that allows to limit the amount of sewage which goes in the river. So where are you from?

I'm from New York. You know, of course you're always, you're like, "Ah, it's the Seine." No, but it's been really good. It's nice. I feel like New York is a little bit different, but I feel like certain parts are okay, like certain beaches and things like that. But the river, no.

Every morning they test the water and if it's not safe for swimming, they do not open the site. And they had to do that quite a few times because depending on the weather conditions and on the amount of rain as well, the water quality can vary quite widely.

We build cities around water 'cause we need water for live but we forget it for a century and we just reconnected now. It's really popular. We have many people coming in. Actually after approximately 10 days opening, we are more than 22,000 people in the three different sites we have in Paris.

So I'm about to dive in. I'm not too worried I'll feel sick, but right now it does not feel completely natural. It smells like the city. It doesn't quite smell like the Mediterranean Sea. I'm not seeing anything scary in there.

It does feel really weird to be in the Seine River. For many Parisians this moment, it's quite a historic one. Being able to swim in the Seine River is an unbelievable moment for the people who are here. They all hope they'll be able to swim for the rest of the summer and the summers to come. This may inspire as well other cities to do the same.
